Weeding

Weeds Don't Wait, and Staying on Top of Them Takes More Time Than Most People Have

A weed problem doesn’t stay the same size. Left alone, a garden bed that looks manageable in early spring can be completely overrun by late November. Annual weeds set seed and multiply exponentially. Perennial weeds like oxalis, bindii, and couch grass establish root systems that become progressively harder to remove the longer they’re left. And once weeds get ahead of your garden, reclaiming it is a far bigger job than simply keeping pace would have been.

Most people know this. The problem isn’t knowledge, it’s time. Weeding is physical, repetitive work that gets pushed down the weekend list until it’s no longer a manageable task.

There’s also the question of how weeding gets done. Many garden services reach for the spray bottle as a first resort because it’s fast. But herbicide use in residential gardens, particularly conventional glyphosate-based products, carries real risks: damage to nearby desirable plants if there’s any drift, disruption to soil biology, and exposure concerns for children, pets, and the wider garden ecosystem. It’s effective, but it’s a blunt instrument, and in a garden you care about, it deserves to be a last resort, not a default.

Professional Weeding Done Properly, With the Approach Your Garden Deserves

At Flourish & Bloom Gardening, hand weeding is our default approach, and we hold to that even when it takes longer.

Removing weeds by hand, root and all, is the most thorough method available. Done correctly, it eliminates the weed entirely rather than burning back the visible top growth while leaving a root system intact to reshoot. It protects the plants around it. It doesn’t disturb the soil structure in the way that aggressive cultivation can. And it leaves the garden genuinely clean rather than temporarily scorched.

Where hand removal isn’t practical, such as in dense gravel areas, large paved sections, or where a persistent weed has established too broadly for manual removal to be efficient, we use Slasher, a certified organic herbicide made from natural plant-derived fatty acids. It is registered for use in organic production, breaks down naturally in the soil, and doesn’t leave the kind of residues associated with conventional herbicide use. It is not our first choice; it is our considered backup when the situation genuinely calls for it.

If you want your garden cared for by people who think carefully about how the work gets done, not just whether it gets done, this is the approach we bring.

Our Weeding Services

Garden Bed Weeding

Thorough, careful hand weeding that protects your plants and cleans your beds properly.

Garden bed weeding is the core of what most clients need. Over time, even well-maintained beds accumulate weeds, particularly in the gaps between established plants where mulch cover is thinner and light reaches the soil. Seasonal flushes, particularly in spring when weed seeds germinate en masse, can make beds look untidy quickly even in gardens that are otherwise well kept.

We hand weed garden beds systematically, working through each section carefully to remove weeds at the root. For annual weeds, removal before seeding is the priority; cutting that cycle off is the most effective way to reduce the weed burden over time. For perennial weeds, we focus on root extraction, because surface removal without the root structure simply delays regrowth rather than ending it.

We take care around established plants, bulb areas, and emerging seasonal growth. Weeding in a planted garden requires attention and judgment; we don’t rush through it.

Following weeding, we tidy the bed surface and, where it’s part of the agreed service, top up or reposition mulch to help suppress future germination.

Lawn Weed Control

Keeping your lawn clean of broadleaf weeds and invasive grasses without blanket spraying.

Lawn weeds present a different challenge from garden bed weeds. Broadleaf weeds like dandelion, clover, plantain, and bindii establish themselves in thin or stressed turf and can spread quickly if conditions favour them. Invasive grasses, particularly paspalum and winter grass, can become well entrenched before they’re noticed.

Our approach to lawn weeding depends on the weed type, density, and distribution. Isolated weeds in an otherwise healthy lawn are best removed by hand, which avoids any risk to the surrounding turf. Where a weed is more widespread but still manageable, we’ll advise on targeted spot treatment with Slasher where hand removal would be impractical, alongside recommendations for lawn health practices that reduce the weed’s competitive advantage over time.

We’ll always be straight with you about what’s realistic. A heavily infested lawn may require a more substantial remediation programme. A lawn that’s mostly healthy with scattered weeds is generally a much more straightforward and rewarding job.

Pathway, Driveway, and Hard Surface Weed Removal

Clearing weeds from paving, gravel, steps, and edges without leaving residue.

Weeds that establish in the cracks of paving, along the edges of driveways, between gravel, and in retaining wall joints are some of the most persistent in any garden. They’re difficult to hand pull cleanly because their root systems run into the substrate, and they regrow quickly from even small root fragments left behind.

For hard surface areas, we use a combination of careful manual removal and, where appropriate, targeted Slasher application. Because Slasher breaks down rapidly on contact with soil, it’s well suited to use in gravel and paved areas where conventional herbicide residues can linger and cause problems if planting is later intended nearby.

We also pay close attention to garden edges where lawn or pathway meets a garden bed. These transition zones accumulate weeds quickly and are often the first place that makes a garden look neglected. Keeping edges clean is one of the most effective things you can do for the overall presentation of a garden.

Weeding for New Garden Establishment

Clearing existing weed growth properly before new planting begins.

Planting into a weedy garden is one of the most common mistakes in garden establishment, and one of the most costly to remedy later. Perennial weeds that haven’t been fully removed before planting will regrow through new plants, through mulch, and around root systems where they become progressively harder to reach.

Before any new planting is laid out, the existing weed burden needs to be understood and addressed properly. For beds with moderate weed cover, hand removal is straightforward and thorough. For beds with significant perennial weed establishment, particularly couch grass, oxalis, or kikuyu, a more systematic programme may be needed, potentially including multiple rounds of removal over a period of weeks to catch regrowth from remaining root fragments.

We can carry out pre-establishment weeding as a standalone service or as part of a broader garden design and installation project. Either way, starting clean makes everything that follows easier and more successful.

Ongoing Weed Management Programmes

Regular weeding visits that keep the problem from getting ahead of you.

The most effective weed management is consistent weed management. Clients on a regular maintenance programme benefit from weeding being integrated into each visit, so beds are checked and addressed before any weed has the chance to set seed or establish deeply. This keeps the workload steady and manageable rather than allowing it to accumulate into a major remediation job.

For clients who aren’t on a maintenance programme, we offer standalone weeding visit schedules, typically monthly or six-weekly through the active growing season, with reduced frequency in winter when weed growth slows. We’ll recommend a frequency that suits your garden’s particular weed pressure and your goals for how it should look throughout the year.

Consistency is genuinely the most important factor in weed management. A garden that receives regular attention stays on top of the problem. One that receives occasional intensive interventions is always playing catch-up.

About Our Approach to Herbicide Use

We want to be straightforward about this, because it’s something clients reasonably want to understand.

Our strong preference is always to hand pull. It is more thorough, gentler on the surrounding garden ecosystem, and more consistent with how we think responsible garden care should be practised. The vast majority of our weeding work is done entirely by hand.

When we do need to use a herbicide, we use Slasher Organic Herbicide. Slasher is a contact herbicide made from nonanoic acid, a naturally occurring fatty acid derived from plant oils. It is approved for use in certified organic production systems in Australia, it breaks down rapidly in soil and water, and it does not have the systemic activity of glyphosate-based products, meaning it works on the plant tissue it contacts without translocating through the root system.

This has practical implications worth understanding. Because Slasher is a contact herbicide, it is highly effective on annual weeds and on the visible top growth of perennial weeds. On deeply rooted perennials, it may require follow-up applications as the root system regrows. We’ll always be clear about what to expect and when follow-up is likely to be needed.

We do not use glyphosate or other conventional herbicides. This is a considered position, not just a marketing choice, and we’re happy to talk through the reasoning if it’s useful.

How We Work

1. Initial Assessment For new clients, we’ll assess the weed burden across your garden before quoting. Weed type, density, and root depth all affect how long the work takes and what approach will be most effective. We give you an honest picture of what’s involved.

2. Systematic Removal We work through beds and areas methodically, prioritising seeding weeds, deeply established perennials, and areas with the highest visual impact. We don’t rush weeding; the point is to do it properly.

3. Surface Tidy and Mulch After weeding, bed surfaces are tidied and, where agreed, mulch is applied or repositioned. A good mulch layer, typically 50 to 75mm of organic material, is one of the most effective weed suppression tools available and reduces the workload of subsequent visits meaningfully.

4. Honest Reporting If we notice weed types or patterns that suggest an underlying issue, such as a grass variety spreading from a neighbouring property, or a persistent perennial that will need a longer programme to address, we’ll tell you clearly rather than simply billing hours without solving the problem.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do you prefer hand weeding over spraying?

Hand pulling removes the entire weed, root and all, which is the most thorough form of control available. Chemical spraying, even with organic products, addresses visible top growth but doesn’t always eliminate deep root systems on perennial weeds. Manual removal is also gentler on surrounding plants, soil biology, and the broader garden ecosystem.

Slasher is a certified organic herbicide made from nonanoic acid, a naturally occurring fatty acid derived from plant oils. It is approved for use in certified organic growing systems in Australia. As with any herbicide, we recommend keeping people and pets clear of treated areas until the product has dried, after which it is considered safe. We’ll advise you on re-entry timing when we use it.

Oxalis, along with couch grass, kikuyu, and similar perennials, requires sustained effort to manage effectively. Because these weeds regrow from bulbils, stolons, or root fragments that remain in the soil after surface removal, a single weeding visit won’t resolve the problem. We’ll set realistic expectations and recommend a programme of regular removal over time, which does achieve genuine results.

We can apply or reposition mulch as part of the service. A good mulch layer suppresses light reaching the soil surface and significantly reduces weed germination between visits. If mulch supply and application is something you’d like included, we can quote for that as part of the overall programme.

This depends on the season, the weed pressure in your garden, and how you want it to look. Through spring and summer, monthly visits are a reasonable minimum for most established gardens. A well-mulched garden with low weed pressure may need attention only every six to eight weeks. We’ll give you an honest recommendation based on your specific situation.

Yes. Vegetable gardens tend to have higher weed pressure than ornamental beds because the soil is cultivated more frequently and is typically fertile and open. Hand weeding is particularly important in veggie gardens where close planting makes spray application risky even with an organic product.

Yes. For hard surfaces and gravel areas, we use a combination of manual removal and targeted Slasher application where needed. Slasher is well suited to these areas as it breaks down quickly in soil without leaving residues.

Yes. Weeding can be built into a regular maintenance programme so it’s addressed consistently throughout the growing season. Clients already on a maintenance schedule simply have weeding included as part of each visit.
